What is the difference between corn meal and polenta?

Are these more or less the same thing? Also, why is the price so different? Where I shop corn meal is dirt cheap and the polenta is very costly. Is this some kind of marketing gimmick? I notice the polenta comes in a fancy bag and the corn meal in a rather plain looking box. Hmmmm
