Capt. Lynch was an agent in Ireland for absent English landlords. He was a hard and cruel man or very dedicated to his duties depending on your point of view. A band of his tenants grabbed him one day and hung him after a spate of evictions. This started the phrase "to lynch someone" that is hang them.That was the way we gained the phrase and action to lynch a person.
